Commission calendar omitting Christian festivals

Question for written answer P-000191/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Gaston Franco (PPE)

The Commission has published a diary for English school pupils which commemorates numerous religious festivals but none belonging to Christianity.

Following protests from numerous citizens and politicians, the Commission has admitted to making a ‘mistake’ and has withdrawn the diary.

The Commission cannot conceivably speak out against the attacks against Christians in the Middle East whilst turning its back on Christians in Europe.

In this context, could the Commission explain the reasons for this mistake and tell us how such a breakdown could occur in its systems for monitoring performance of the contract for producing the diary?

Even though the mistake has been publicly acknowledged, does the Commission not think it should make a public apology as much for moral reasons as for the financial cost incurred?
