Question for written answer P-010334/2011
to the Commission
Rule 117
Axel Voss (PPE)

 Subject: Brussels IV European School
 Answer in writing

1. With reference to the petition signed by parents of over 300 pupils at the Brussels IV European School concerning the continued use of the Berkendael site (https://sites.google.com/site/berkendaelpetition/), can the Commission confirm the Berkendael site has been made available for use by the European schools for an unlimited period and, consequently, will continue to be available after the end of the 2011/2012 academic year?

2. Given that a fifth European school will be required in Brussels within the next four years, if not earlier, and the Berkendael site could be used for this purpose, why does the Commission not make every effort to ensure that the Berkendael site is retained, during the intervening transitional period, as a school for the 300 plus children of the petition signatories for whom the daily commute through the city centre to school in Laeken would probably take from two-and-a-half to three hours?
