Parliamentary question - P-004480/2012(ASW)Parliamentary question
P-004480/2012(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Dalli on behalf of the Commission

In addition to its previous reply to Written Question E‑10483/2011[1], the Commission would like to specify that the European convention for the protection of pet animals is not part of the EU set of rules.

In relation to Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the Commission would refer the Honourable Member to its reply to Written Question E‑6543/2011[2].

In relation to the human health risks associated with the uncontrolled growth of the dog population, the Commission has not received substantial scientific evidence that could justify an overall initiative at EU level.

The EU research project CALLISTO[3] is to provide an overview with regard to the role of companion animals, as a source of infectious diseases for people and food animals. The results of this project are expected by the end of 2014.
