Question for written answer P-000767-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Georgios Epitideios (NI)

Subject:  No to the adoption of Turkish as an official EU language
 Answer in writing

According to press reports, the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, has lodged a request with the competent authorities of the European Union to have Turkish recognised as one of its official languages, on the grounds that this would contribute to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

It will be recalled that 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus is occupied by the Turkish army and that the Cyprus problem is about the illegal invasion and continuing occupation of a sovereign State and is not even remotely a linguistic issue.

Given that Turkey is not a Member State of the EU and that a host of non-European languages are spoken on its territory and also the fact that people who live in Europe should use the indigenous languages of our continent, will the Commission say:
1. Is this information correct?
2. If so, does it accept that such a move would be tantamount to rewarding the occupying army in Cyprus and would be an insult to Cypriots?
3. Is it aware that such a move would pave the way for recognising as official languages dozens of other languages spoken by EU citizens originating from third countries?
