Impact of Brexit on beef quotas agreed under CETA

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) has been concluded between Canada and the European Union and is now entering the ratification stage. Where agriculture is concerned, CETA grants Canada two series of beef tariff quotas, which are to increase over a period of six years. There is to be one quota for fresh and refrigerated meat (5 140 tons in N+1, rising to 30 840 tons in N+6), and one for frozen meat (2 500 tons in N+1 rising to 15 000 tons in N+6).

In the wake of Brexit, the EU will have to negotiate the UK exit once the UK Government issues a notification under Article 50 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. In the light of the foregoing, therefore:
