Parliamentary question - P-009318/2016(ASW)Parliamentary question
P-009318/2016(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the Commission

6-Benzyladenine was approved by the Commission for use in plant protection products as from 1 June 2011. This approval is based on a risk assessment which was peer-reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA reached its conclusion on the basis of a dossier in which the applicant submitted data on uses in seed maize (not for human or animal consumption) and apples.

EFSA is only involved in the risk assessment of data dossiers. The decision-making on the possible approval of an active substance or the authorisation of plant protection products are the tasks of the Commission and the Member States respectively.

Only the use of 6-Benzyladenine as plant growth regulator can be authorised by Member States, however there is no restriction regarding crops to be treated.
