Something which is seen as a serious flaw with the draft directive on the acquisition and possession of weapons is the fact that it is not based on reliable analysis. The lack of a thorough assessment of the far-reaching effects of the proposal casts serious doubt on the legitimacy of the proposed measures.

— Why did the Commission not carry out an impact assessment at the very beginning?— Was it because of fears that, in the light of the results of such an assessment, some of the measures proposed by the Commission could be seriously brought into question?
