 Subject:  Roma registers in Italy
 Answer in writing

On 16 June 2018, the Italian Minister for Home Affairs announced the registration of all Sinti and Roma living in Italy. The announcement was subject of a topical debate in Parliament on 4 July 2018, during which the Commission condemned all stigmatising, racist and xenophobic behaviour.

On 3 July 2018, the regional parliament of the Italian region of Lombardy authorised the regional authorities to start registering Sinti, Roma and Travellers living in settlements in Lombardy.

Will the Commission:
1. Assess whether the measures taken by the Lombardy regional authorities constitute a case of discrimination based on race, ethnic origin and nationality, and whether the registration can be considered compatible with the fundamental rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the anti-discrimination acquis?
2. Assess whether the measures are in breach of Article 9(2)(g) of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation)?
3. Raise its concerns with the Italian authorities, and take action, including infringement procedures where necessary, in accordance with its powers, in order to avoid any kind of discrimination directed against Sinti, Roma and Travellers in Italy?
