Checks on meat processed in slaughterhouses

Question for written answer P-000485-19
to the Commission
Rule 130

I should like to notify the Commission of a potential danger relating to meat being sold in European shops. Last week, the Polish television channel TVN broadcast a report which revealed that dead or seriously sick cows had ended up in slaughterhouses in Mazowieckie Province in eastern Poland. The report revealed that no vet had carried out checks on the processed meat. Still, this meat made it onto the shelves of shops in several Member States as ostensibly ‘harmless’. Consumers have been put in danger through buying meat that they were unaware could pose a health risk.

Is the Commission aware of this particular case? When and how did the Commission learn about it and what information does it have?

How does the Commission intend to address this issue?
