to the Commission
Rule 130
Francis Zammit Dimech (PPE)

Subject:  EU measures to guarantee the highest standards of food safety
 Answer in writing
High levels of cancer-causing chemicals such as acrylamide have recently been found to have been present in coffee and foodstuffs, including biscuits and crisps, in 10 EU Member States. To this end:
1. In view of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002, what measures has the Commission introduced to address serious food problems that do affect or could affect European consumers and their health?
2. What is the Commission doing to ensure that levels of chemicals such as acrylamide are kept low and that adherence to such standards is obligatory and not voluntary?
