The European Union has a number of funds (the European Regional Development Fund) and programmes (Creative Europe, Horizon 2020, Erasmus +, Europe for Citizens) that can be mobilised for the promotion, protection and renovation of Europe's cultural heritage.
2018 was the European Year of Cultural Heritage, and during that time the Union focused on making European citizens more aware of the values embodied in the European cultural heritage and the need to protect it.
The devastating fire of 15 April 2019 at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the most emblematic symbols of Europe’s cultural heritage, triggered an outpouring of emotion among people in Europe and worldwide.
Will the Commission say:
- —Will it provide financial or other assistance — and how much — to help restore the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris and its artworks?
- —Will it step up its efforts, through the European Heritage Label or in other ways, to preserve and promote the European cultural heritage in the period 2021-2027?
- —Will it support increasing the share of the EU’s budget devoted to cultural policy and the protection of our heritage from the current amount of 0.15% of the budget to 1%?
