Question for written answer P-003138-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Malik Azmani (Renew) , Hilde Vautmans (Renew)

Subject:  USA giving Turkey free rein in northern Syria and creating a dangerous power vacuum
 Answer in writing

The US administration intends to withdraw militarily from certain areas in northern Syria currently controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In doing so, the United States will pave the way for a military operation by Turkish armed forces in that region. The presence of thousands of former IS fighters living in camps there and the likelihood of a military conflict raise a number of questions(1).

1. The US decision may have a major impact on the relationship between the European Union and Turkey. What impact and risks does the Commission expect from this development for the European Union?

2. Can the Commission confirm that responsibility for the thousands of IS fighters who have been detained and are being held in Kurdish camps will be transferred to the Turkish authorities?

3. What preparations are being made in anticipation of the possibility of increased security risks and refugee flows that may result from an armed conflict between Turkey and the Kurds?
