Parliamentary questions
PDF 44kWORD 9k
18 December 2019
Priority question for written answer P-004508/2019
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Alessandra Moretti (S&D)
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Participation of the EU and its Member States in the G20 in Riyadh

Considering that:

On 1 December 2019, Saudi Arabia took over the rotating presidency of the G20, which includes the heads of the European institutions and whose next summit is scheduled to take place in Riyadh in November 2020;

Agnès Callamard, UN Special Rapporteur on Arbitrary Executions, recently presented to the DROI Subcommittee the unambiguous results of her investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to which the chain of command for the execution leads directly to Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who holds de facto power in the Kingdom;

This tragic and bloody event is the tip of the iceberg in a crackdown on all forms of political dissent which has been behind numerous executions and hundreds if not thousands of arbitrary arrests and detentions throughout the country;

Mohammed Bin Salman himself represented Saudi Arabia at the last G20 meetings and there is every reason to believe that he intends to chair the Summit in Riyadh himself;

Does the Commission not agree that the participation of the EU and its Member States in the G20 in Riyadh should be carefully considered and should, in any event, be withdrawn if Prince Mohammed Bin Salman chairs it?
