Priority question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
David McAllister
 Answer in writing
Subject: Strengthening the education system in the EU

The development of outstanding vocational training is crucial if the challenges of digitalisation and the skills shortage are to be addressed.

In order to further strengthen education systems in Europe, a follow-up strategy to the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET 2020) must be developed. Lifelong learning and further training must be promoted more forcefully.

The European Universities Initiative enables greater cohesion in the EU, increased cooperation among universities and the training of European graduates. It is an initiative which must be continued and reinforced.

What action does the Commission plan to take to strengthen vocational training and tackle the skills shortage?

Will the Commission develop a follow-up strategy to the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET 2020)? If so, what will its objectives and priorities be?

What action does the Commission plan to take to strengthen and promote the European universities networks?
