P-001115/2020
Priority question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Jean-Paul Garraud
 Answer in writing
Subject: Spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus in the EU

Following the cases in France, Italy too is now reporting Covid-19 coronavirus infections, with 224 cases, including six deaths, and has consequently decided to place 11 towns under quarantine.

The number of deaths from this viral pneumonia epidemic (more than 2 660 by 25 February 2020 (1) ) is increasing, despite a slight drop in the rate of new infections.

Faced with this global spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus and the health risk caused population displacement, many third countries have decided to restrict their trade and close their borders to protect their populations.

In order to minimise the risk of the uncontrolled spread of this deadly virus, does the Commission intend to suspend the free movement of people within the Schengen area and recommend that Member States close their borders, or at least put in place systematic health controls?
