P-003158/2020
Priority question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)
Subject: Turkish has turned back an aircraft carrying medical equipment for Cyprus

Turkey has again taken illegal, provocative and reprehensible action against the Republic of Cyprus. It has banned the use of its airspace to a Russian plane carrying medical equipment from China to Cyprus, forcing the pilot to head to Moscow airport for refuelling.

The aircraft was carrying 36 tonnes of medical equipment, including protective gowns, shoe covers, single-use surgical gowns and protective masks, to help deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Will the Commission say:

1. What action is it taking to protect Member States from such illegal actions that directly jeopardise flight safety and prevent the transport of medical equipment to meet the needs of European citizens?

2. How does it view the fact that an applicant country has gone so far as to block humanitarian aid from reaching its destination?
