Chinese economic expansion in Europe

to the Commission
Rule 138
Bogdan Rzońca (ECR)
The economic crisis in the EU resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic is triggering a reflection on China’s economic power and its political influence in Europe. China should be seen as a cooperating partner, but at the same time as an economic competitor seeking to assert itself in the global economy. After the 2009 crisis, China adopted a variety of measures in support of faster economic growth, in particular applying an expansionary credit policy. Those activities enabled it to boost its exports and thus achieve a significant position in world trade.
The activities of Chinese economic operators in Europe consist largely of buying up European public debt, investing in companies and taking advantage of the open market in public procurement. Chinese businesses receive huge subsidies so that they can compete with European companies.

- 2.Does the Commission see the need for Europe-wide solutions for monitoring Chinese direct investment?
