We have recently learnt from the press of the tragic death of Mario Paciolla, the young Italian citizen who was found dead on 15 July 2020 in his home in San Vicente di Caguán. Mario Paciolla was in Colombia as a field officer with the second United Nations Verification Mission in the Caquetá Department and was engaged in an internal peace project between the local government and the FARC.

After initially treating his death as suicide, the local district attorney’s office has begun a murder investigation. The information obtained so far has been confirmed by the Italian Government, which has also announced that it has been in contact with the team responsible for the United Nations mission.
