to the Commission
Rule 138
Rosa Estaràs Ferragut (PPE), Dolors Montserrat (PPE)
Subject: Aid measures requested by the Spanish government

The Coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on all the world’s economies. As things stand, according to the latest economic analyses, the Spanish economy is the biggest loser of the crisis. This is due to a combination of health and economic factors.

Spain is one of the European countries with the highest number of small and medium-sized enterprises, which have been hard hit by the lack of liquidity. Thus, SMEs account for 72% of employment in Spain, as compared with the European Union average of 66%.

Another reason is the importance of tourism for the Spanish economy. The impact of the crisis is devastating for the tourism sector and affects the recovery of all Spanish economic activity.

In light of the above:

In general terms, what aid measures has the Spanish Government asked for from the European Commission in connection with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic?
