Priority question for written answer  P-000143/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Maria Spyraki (PPE)
Subject: Protection of designation of origin of Macedonian products

Following the implementation of the Prespa Agreement, the Exporters’ Association of Northern Greece (SEVE) registered the trademark for Macedonian products — ‘Macedonia the Great’, which it created in order to guarantee and promote the solely Greek identity of authentic Macedonian products — with the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). However, companies from the neighbouring country systematically use brands or references to products which supposedly originate from ‘Macedonia’, creating confusion among investors and consumers concerning the identity of products or even usurping their geographical origin in order to commercialise the reputation they have steadily built up on the international market.

Given that these practices have a very serious impact and cause incalculable economic and moral damage to product manufacturers in northern Greece, who make a very significant contribution to the country’s total GDP,

can the Commission say:

1. What information does it have on the above practices and what steps can it take to avoid misleading European consumers and to clearly identify the origin of products?

2. Are there any European funds that can be used to promote the ‘Macedonia the Great’ trademark?
