Priority question for written answer  P-003627/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi (PPE)
Subject: Provocative actions by the Turkish coast guard in Cyprus

There has been another incident of Turkish aggression in Cypriot territorial waters. A Turkish patrol boat opened fire on a vessel belonging to the Cypriot coast guard, forcing it to withdraw from a regular patrol in the area to control illegal migration.

Turkey continues to violate international law and does not respect good neighbourly relations, despite the Turkish President’s assurances to the European Union that he does not want tension in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean but rather seeks cooperation and stability in the wider region.

However, continued provocations by Turkey clearly demonstrate the country’s unlawful intentions to instigate and facilitate illegal crossings by migrants in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean and to violate the sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus at every opportunity.

In the context of the Turkish Government’s announcements that President Erdoğan is preparing a solemn visit to Cyprus’ occupied territories with a nationalistic and religious agenda to commemorate the anniversary of the invasion of the island:

1. How does the Commission intend to react to the continued Turkish provocations in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, which it has been monitoring closely?

2. Does it intend to investigate further the possible involvement of the Turkish coast guard in the trafficking of migrants?

3. What is its view of Erdoğan’s upcoming visit to occupied Cyprus?
