Priority question for written answer  P-003629/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Costas Mavrides (S&D)
Subject: Turkish patrol boat opens fire on a small Cypriot port police boat

According to Cypriot police, provocations by Turkey reached new heights on 16 July. A Turkish patrol boat opened fire on a small Cypriot port police boat as a warning to leave the area it was patrolling, following it almost as far as the Kato Pyrgos fishing shelter. The police boat, with three crew members, was on patrol 11 nautical miles off the coast to deal with the increased illegal migration organised from Turkish beaches in collusion with the Turkish coastguard.

The incident is part of the hybrid war that Turkey is waging against the EU, in which it is organising the illegal mass transfer of people from third countries to the EU and Cyprus in particular, which proportionally hosts the largest number of refugees and migrants.

In the light of the above:

Given that this incident presents a serious challenge to the EU and the peculiarities of the ongoing illegal Turkish occupation of land and sea belonging to the Republic of Cyprus, as well as the existence of an organised illegal trafficking ring through which third country nationals are sent to an EU Member State with the collusion of Turkish security forces, the area constituting the EU’s external borders must be protected with the help of the European Coast Guard.

In view of the urgency of the situation, is this option being considered and when is it going to take effect?
