Priority question for written answer  P-005172/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Pierfrancesco Majorino (S&D)
Subject: Humanitarian situation on the border between Poland and Belarus

A humanitarian tragedy has been taking place in recent weeks at the border between Belarus and Poland. Thousands of migrants from the Middle East are being blocked by Polish police forces who are pushing back the migrants, also through the use of violence, tear gas and water cannons.

Poland, which receives EUR 114.5 million in EU funding for border management, has also announced that in December it will start building a wall at the border with Belarus.

1. How does the Commission intend to ensure that the funds allocated to Poland to manage the border situation are not used for the construction of walls?

2. How does the Commission intend to ensure that migrants’ human rights are being respected and that violence against them is not being used?

3. Will the Commission implement, as a matter of urgency, a reception plan that protects the dignity of migrants and ensures that their rights are fully respected?
