Relocation of migrants in Europe

One of the Commission’s objectives is to relocate asylum seekers among the countries involved in the project that went operational in 2015.

However, despite the stated objective of relocating 6 000 people per month, according to the UNHCR under 2% of the overall relocation quotas were taken up in 2016, highlighting the slow and ineffective nature of the programme.

Relocations are a relevant measure, particularly for countries of first arrival for asylum seekers, and especially Italy and Greece. After having made an initial application for asylum in the Member State of arrival, they can then be transferred to the country of relocation to have their application for international protection examined.

In view of this, can the Commission state:
