Blocking of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan
16.12.2022
Priority question for written answer P-004099/2022
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Assita Kanko (ECR)
Azerbaijan is blocking the Lachin corridor to Nagorno-Karabakh, making it impossible to transport food and medical supplies to Artsakh. Moreover, Azerbaijan has shut down gas supplies. Azerbaijan is thus again violating the trilateral ceasefire declaration of 9 November 2020, failing to meet its obligation to ensure the safe movement of civilians, vehicles and cargo through the Lachin Corridor in both directions. This Azerbaijani provocation will lead to a humanitarian crisis and undermine the fragile peace in the region.
I would welcome answers from the HR/VP to the following:
- 1.What specific steps will the HR/VP take to ensure the security of the indigenous Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh?
- 2.Will the mandate of the EU Monitoring Mission be extended and the number of experts deployed increased?
- 3.Will restrictive measures be adopted against the Azerbaijani authorities responsible?
