to the Commission
Rule 138
Kim Van Sparrentak (Verts/ALE), Svenja Hahn (Renew), Axel Voss (PPE)
Now that the AI Act has been adopted, the European AI Office will have a key role in implementing and enforcing European AI rules through secondary legislation, notably by specifying the obligations for general purpose AI models with systemic risk. Those tasks require strong leadership and expertise: a suitable candidate should be an international expert in the field with a proven track record and trusted reputation, especially when it comes to navigating complex issues. The director needs a deep understanding of both AI technology and AI governance. Strong coordination capacities are essential considering the importance of secondary legislation, harmonisation and exchange with multiple stakeholders, including from academia, civil society and SMEs. Furthermore, a suitable candidate will have to stand strong in the face of unprecedented lobbying efforts. Finally, to attract and especially keep top talent, the director needs to be able to provide an attractive working environment with adequate management.
- 1.What will the selection procedure be for choosing the top candidate with the best credentials as director of the European AI Office?
- 2.How will the Commission attract top candidates with strong international expertise and leadership in the AI field?
- 3.Will the candidates be available for public hearings before the European Parliament?
