The President made a statement on the declaration of independence proclaimed by the Parliament of Kosovo the previous day (17.02.2008). He called on Kosovo's leaders to fulfil their political responsibilities and welcomed the Council's decision to send the EULEX mission to Kosovo to supervise the early stages of independence.
3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting
The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.
4. Dispute as to the validity of the mandate of a Member
At its meeting of 14.01.2008, the JURI Committee had, pursuant to Rule 3(4), considered the request by Beniamino Donnici for the annulment of Giulietto Chiesa's appointment as a Member of the European Parliament.
The JURI Committee had unanimously decided to reject this request and had confirmed the validity of Giulietto Chiesa's mandate. The chairman of the JURI Committee had sent a letter setting out the reasons for this decision to the President of Parliament on 16.01.2008.
The President noted that there was no opposition to the JURI Committee's decision, which was therefore confirmed.
5. Request for the defence of parliamentary immunity
The President announced that he had received a request from Tatjana Ždanoka for the defence of her privileges and immunity, following an incident that had occurred while she had been visiting Estonia.
Under Rule 6(3), the request had been referred to the committee responsible, the JURI Committee.

7. Temporary Committee on Climate Change (extension of term of office)
At the request of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change, the Conference of Presidents had decided, at its meeting of 14.02.2008, to extend the Temporary Committee's term of office by nine months, with effect from 10.05.2008.
It had also been proposed that an interim report devoted exclusively to scientific date be submitted, if possible, by the May part-session. The final report would be submitted to Parliament at the end of the Temporary Committee's new term of office.
The President noted that there was no opposition to this proposal.
