1. Resumption of the session

The sitting opened at 15.05.


2. Statement by the President

The President expressed Parliament's sympathy with the many victims of Cyclone Nargis, which had struck Burma on the previous Saturday; he expected the Burmese Government to facilitate the implementation of international assistance measures and that Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the Sakharov Prize in 1990, be set free.


3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting

The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

Richard Seeber let it be known that his obligations prevented him from attending two sittings of the current part-session.


4. Composition of Parliament

Alfonso Andria, Renato Brunetta, Mario Mantovani, Lapo Pistelli and Luciana Sbarbati had declared their election to the Italian Parliament and their decision to take up this mandate.

Pursuant to Article 7(2) of the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and to Rule 4(1) and (4) of its Rules of Procedure, Parliament noted this and established the vacancy of their seats with effect from 29.04.2008.

It had also been established from facts verifiable from sources available to the public that Umberto Bossi, Alessandra Mussolini and Adriana Poli Bortone had been elected to the Italian Parliament and were participating in its work.

Pursuant to Article 7(2) of the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and to Rule 4(1) of its Rules of Procedure, Parliament, under Rule 3(2), second subparagraph, noted this and established the vacancy of their seats with effect from 29.04.2008.


5. Microcredit (written declaration)

Written declaration 0002/2008 submitted by Jamila Madeira, Ana Maria Gomes, Anna Záborská, Luisa Morgantini and Miguel Angel Martínez Martínez on microcredit had been signed by the majority of Parliament's component Members. Consequently, in accordance with Rule 116(4), it would be forwarded to its addressees and published, together with the names of the signatories, in the Texts Adopted of the sitting of 08.05.2008.


6. Corrigendum (Rule 204a)

The committee responsible had forwarded the following corrigendum to a text adopted by Parliament.

- Corrigendum to the position of the European Parliament adopted at first reading on 11 December 2007 with a view to the adoption of Directive 2008/.../EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the interoperability of the rail system within the Community (recast) - P6_TA-PROV(2007)0597 - (COM(2006)0783 – C6-0474/2006 – 2006/0273(COD)).

Pursuant to Rule 204a(4) of the Rules of Procedure, this corrigendum would be deemed approved unless, not later than 48 hours after its announcement, a request was made by a political group or at least forty Members that it be put to the vote.

The corrigendum was available on the Séance en direct site.


7. Action taken on Parliament's positions and resolutions

The Commission communication on the action taken on the non-legislative resolution entitled 'Towards a strategy on the rights of the child' adopted by Parliament at the January I 2008 part-session was available on the Séance en direct site.

Request by the PPE-DE Group to add, as the second item on the agenda, Council and Commission statements on the deterioration of the situation in Georgia and to wind up the debate with the tabling of motions for resolutions to be put to the vote at the June I part-session.

Parliament agreed to the request.

As the Council was unable to be present after 20.00 to answer the oral question on 'misleading “directory companies”' (item 24 on the final draft agenda), it was proposed that this item be held over to the next part-session.
