The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.
4. Composition of Parliament
The Romanian authorities had given notice that Roberta Alma Anastase, Titus Corlăţean, Petru Filip, Monica Maria Iacob-Ridzi, Cătălin-Ioan Nechifor, Dumitru Oprea and Mihaela Popa had been elected members of the Romanian Parliament.
Under Article 7(2) of the Act concerning the election of representatives of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and Rule 4(1) of its Rules of Procedure, Parliament noted this and established the vacancy with effect from 19 December 2008.
The Romanian authorities had also given notice of the election to the European Parliament, with effect from 22 December 2008, of Adrian Manole replacing Roberta Alma Anastase, Iosif Matula replacing Monica Maria Iacob-Ridzi, Călin Cătălin Chiriţă replacing Mihaela Popa, Alexandru Nazare replacing Petru Filip, and Daniel Petru Funeriu replacing Dumitru Oprea.
The Finnish authorities had given notice of the appointment of Eva-Riitta Siitonen to replace Piia-Noora Kauppi as Member of Parliament with effect from 1 January 2009.
Under Rule 3(2), until such time as their credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that they had previously made written declarations stating that they did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Adrian Manole, Iosif Matula, Călin Cătălin Chiriţă, Alexandru Nazare, Daniel Petru Funeriu and Eva-Riitta Siitonen would take their seats in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto.

At the request of the PPE-DE Group, Parliament ratified the following proposal:

6. Data protection (appointment of the European supervisor and the assistant supervisor)
The President announced that, pursuant to Article 42 of Regulation (EC) No 45/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2000, the Conference of Presidents, at its meeting of 8 January 2009, following the deliberations of the LIBE Committee, had approved the joint appointment by Parliament and the Council of Peter Hustinx, as supervisor, and Giovanni Buttarelli, as assistant supervisor.
The President would sign the appointment decision on Wednesday together with the President-in-Office of the Council.
