The President read out the results of the first ballot:

- Members voting:      703

- Blank or void:   14

- Votes cast:      689

- Absolute majority:      345

The votes obtained were as follows, in descending order:

- Alejo Vidal-Quadras: 325 votes

- Georgios Papastamkos:      324 votes

- Roberta Angelilli:      316 votes

- Gianni Pittella:      306 votes

- Othmar Karas:      305 votes

- Miguel Angel Martínez Martínez:      276 votes

- Anni Podimata:      269 votes

- Rainer Wieland:      268 votes

- Jacek Protasiewicz:      267 votes

- László Surján:      256 votes

- Edward McMillan-Scott:      225 votes

- Alexander Alvaro:      199 votes

- Oldřich Vlasák:      196 votes

- Isabelle Durant:      182 votes

The President noted that no candidate had obtained an absolute majority of the votes cast and therefore that all the seats remained to be filled.

The President noted that no nominations had been withdrawn and that a second round of voting was therefore necessary.

The vote was taken.
