The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.
3. Welcome
On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed members of a delegation from the US Congress - led by Cliff Stearns - who had taken their seats in the distinguished visitors' gallery.
4. Composition of Parliament
The French authorities had given notice of the election of Eric Andrieu, Jean-Jacob Bicep and Karim Zeribi to replace Kader Arif, Pascal Canfin and Vincent Peillon as Members of Parliament with effect from 16 May 2012.
Under Rule 3(2), until such time as their credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that they had previously made a written declaration stating that they did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Eric Andrieu, Jean-Jacob Bicep and Karim Zeribi would take their seats in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto.

Karim Zeribi had joined the Verts/ALE Group.
6. Composition of Parliament
The Hungarian authorities had given notice of the election of Erik Bánki to replace János Áder as Member of Parliament with effect from 1 June 2012.
Under Rule 3(2), until such time as his credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that he had previously made a written declaration stating that he did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Erik Bánki would take his seat in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto.
7. Verification of credentials
On a proposal from the JURI Committee, Parliament validated the mandates of Minodora Cliveti and Alda Sousa.
The mandate of Minodora Cliveti took effect from 18 May 2012, and that of Alda Sousa with effect from 9 May 2012.
8. Composition of committees and delegations
The President had received the following requests for appointments from the PPE and EFD Groups:

10. Announcements by the President
The President made the following announcements:
- At its meeting of Thursday 7 June 2012 the Justice and Home Affairs Council had agreed a procedure on the Schengen evaluation mechanism that implied a unilateral amendment of the legal basis, which Parliament felt was unacceptable. This matter had been raised with the President at the Conference of Presidents by several political groups, and he had asked the President-in-Office of the Council to make a statement on the subject tomorrow at 09.00;
- The President had written to the new Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić to congratulate him on his election. However, in that letter he also asked him not to call into question the judgments issued by the International Criminal Court in connection with the crimes committed at Srebrenica;
- The President passed on to Parliament the thanks he had received for its support from the 1995 Sakharov Prize winner Leyla Zana. Ms Zana had been sentenced in 2010 under the Turkish anti-terrorism law. The President, on behalf of Parliament, called for Leyla Zana to be given a fair trial;
- The trial of the 2011 Sakharov Prize winner Asmaa Mahfouz was due to start on 17 June 2012 in Cairo. The President had asked the Vice President of the Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton to ensure that the EU's representative in Egypt was personally present at the trial.
