3. Negotiations ahead of Parliament’s first reading (Rule 71) (action taken)

The President announced that no request had been received on behalf of a number of Members or a political group or groups reaching at least the minimum threshold concerning the decisions to enter into interinstitutional negotiations as announced in the Minutes of Monday 23 November 2020 (minutes of 23.11.2020, item 6).

The PECH and ECON committees had therefore been able to initiate the negotiations on expiry of the deadline laid down in Rule 71(2).

5. Statement by the President

The President made a statement on the occasion of the 2020 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. He called for everyone to act together to guarantee gender equality, stop violence against women and protect its victims, and noted that the COVID-19 crisis had caused incidents of violence against women to rise, particularly in the home.

He emphasised the decisive role that Parliament and the other institutions together had to play in this struggle and spoke in particular of Parliament's own action through negotiations on the multiannual financial framework and in accommodating on its premises vulnerable women affected by COVID-19.

He stressed that Parliament would continue to insist on all EU Member States ratifying the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women.
