From 12.11 to 12.40, Parliament held a formal sitting for the award of the Sakharov Prize to the democratic opposition in Belarus, represented by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Veranika Tsapkala.
Before presenting the prize, the President extended his welcome to the other representatives of the democratic opposition in Belarus who were also present in the hemicycle, namely Siarhei Dyleuski, Ales Bialiatski and Stsiapan Putsila, and to Sviatlana Aleksievich, who was attending the formal sitting remotely, along with this year's other finalists.
The President expressed his regret that not all representatives of the democratic opposition in Belarus could attend, in particular the political prisoner Siarhei Tsikhanouski, as well as Mikola Statkevich and Maria Kalesnikava, who were both represented by members of their family, Maria Adamovich and Tatiana Khomich.
Finally, he renewed his call for the release of Sakharov Prize laureates Ilham Tothi, Raif Badawi and Nasrin Sotoudeh, who remained in prison.
