Economy, Transformation and Industry

The single market is the EU’s greatest achievement. With customs barriers dismantled, people, goods, services and capital can move freely throughout Europe. To bring this into being, EU legislators have adopted hundreds of laws to eliminate technical, regulatory and legal barriers. Alongside the single market, the EU has developed a range of policies that shape the everyday lives of its citizens and the functioning of businesses. These include consumer protection, taxation, economic and monetary affairs, energy, industry, research, environmental protection, climate change, and public health, including food safety and disease prevention. Economic and monetary union (EMU) ensures closer coordination of Member States’ economic and fiscal policies at the European level, with the aim of maintaining stability, growth and responsible public finances.
