The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek sends his condolences to the families of the victims of the train crash in Sainthia - a city in the Indian state of West Bengal - in which 56 people have lost their lives.

"Once again West Bengal is the theatre of a railway tragedy. I send my condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Indian state.

Too often we are witnessing workers and commuters bearing the brunt of accidental or terrorist-led transport crashes. I mourn for the sad loss of these innocent people.

I wish a speedy recovery to the numerous injured people who were caught up in this catastrophe and I thank the rescue teams for their untiring work."
