The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek congratulated Dilma Rousseff on winning the Brazilian presidency.

EP President Buzek said:

"Brazil's economic growth has lifted millions of people out of poverty: it has created wealth, a new sense of pride and responsibility.

Brazil has become a key player not only in Latin American, but also in world politics. I am confident that under the new leadership of Dilma Rousseff this trend will not be reverted, but reinforced.

The ties that bind the EU and Brazil are extremely strong, but we should reinforce them even further. This is essential not only for the solidification of the economic recovery, but also for issues such as global governance and climate change."
