EP President Jerzy Buzek said:

"I find the very idea of taking innocent people conducting a peaceful ceremony in a church as hostages particularly reprehensible.

Terrorism is never the answer whatever the differences. Mutual respect is the only way forward in order to build a peaceful future for Iraq.  

We support the Iraqi government in its attempt to break the spiral of violence.

The safety and rights of all minorities including religious groups must be respected and protected in all societies.

I would like to express my condolences to the families of the victims and extend my sympathies to those injured."
