The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, condemns the violence against protesters in Libya and Yemen. President Buzek said:

"The reports from Libya and Yemen are of great concern for us all. I deplore the death of innocent protesters over the last days and I condemn the excessive use of force by the authorities. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.

We see that people not longer fear to stand up for their dignity. They will no longer be intimidated when they voice their legitimate demands and democratic aspirations. The events of the recent weeks are a clear reminder that violence against the own citizens will ultimately fall back on those responsible. The authorities in Libya and Yemen must turn to the people, not against them.

I call on the authorities to refrain from violence and from inciting their supporters to attack peaceful demonstrations. All groups have the right to express their views. All legitimate calls must be heard. Turning own citizens against each other can never be justified - not in the eyes of the international community and especially not in the eyes of the people.

The EU is ready to accompany the democratic changes in its Southern neighbourhood and beyond. We want the people to be at the centre of our cooperation with all partners, in our neighbourhood and in the world. As elected representatives of European citizens, we will stand on the side of the people. As Members of the European Parliament, we must ensure that European policy serves first and foremost the people."
