Violent clashes in Yemen

Brussels -
Tuesday 20/09/2011

The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, made the following statement on the most recent developments in Yemen:

"I am following the developments in Yemen with great concern. Armed repression is not the answer to the aspirations of the Yemeni people. I deplore the increase of violence over the last days and I call upon all political and military leaders to exercise responsibility. It is their duty towards the people to protect human lives and preserve Yemen's unity.

Recent reports of a looming humanitarian crisis in Yemen give further urgency to act. Only an immediate and orderly transition of power will allow for a proper response, also on the part of the international community, to the worsening economic situation in the country.

No one can afford continued lack of progress towards political transition. The road-map of the Gulf Cooperation Council paves a clear way forward and has to be followed by concrete steps by all parties - those in power and those in opposition alike. The people of Yemen should no longer have to suffer because of their leaders' inability to embrace change."
