We aim to make this website easy to use and clear. It is tremendously important for me, as President of the European Parliament, to communicate and listen to citizens. This is why I am using all forms of media, including social media to keep in touch.

I was elected President of the European Parliament by my fellow MEPs on 14 July 2009 for a mandate of two and half years.
The European Parliament is the only directly-elected body of the European Union. MEPs are elected once every five years by voters right across the 27 Member States of the European Union on behalf of its 500 million citizens.
As President of the European Parliament, I view the main challenges that face us with optimism. For me, they are:
- The economic crisis and European solidarity,
- Energy and the environment,
- Foreign policy,
- Human rights and our system of values,
- Our European Parliament and how to reform it.
