A thriving civil society is key to building a democratic culture, which respects human rights. The European Parliament seeks to strengthen civil society as part of its democracy support. It provides a platform for strategic reflection and exchange between civil society actors from countries where human rights are violated.

Parliament is also ready to share its experience of teaming up with civil society actors with partner parliaments. A flagship initiative in this context is the Triangle for Democracy. It gathers parliamentarians, civil society representatives and media actors to reflect on and embrace strategies to fight information manipulation as a threat to democracy, while at the same time preserving and protecting the fundamental right of freedom of expression.

    2-4 September 2025

The European Parliament welcomed in Brussels, from 2 to 4 September 2025, a group of ten content creators, media and civil society representatives from the Republic of Moldova. This initiative emerged in follow up to the earlier visit to Chisinau on 26 June 2025 by DEG Lead Member for Moldova Nicolae ȘTEFĂNUȚĂ.

The programme centred around a workshop moderated by Sorin Ionita (Expert Forum) on Navigating the European information space and tackled the challenges posed by disinformation to the functioning of European democracies, with a particular look at the Republic of Moldova, in the wider context marked by the prospects of EU enlargement.

Participants exchanged with Members of the European Parliament, representatives from the European External Action Service, and communication experts on the most pressing issues as well as best practices when it comes to fostering a resilient and informative democracy, considering the different roles played by public authorities, grass roots organisations, media and other stakeholders.
