Vote on EU aid package to help member states welcome refugees

Budget MEPs vote on Tuesday on a reinforcement of EU migration programmes to help member states deal with urgent migration and border management measures. The aim of the proposal is to contribute to the financing, in most affected member states, of the first reception and registration costs of people fleeing Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian aggression. It is one of the elements of a €400 million support package proposed by the Commission, which in turn is part of a €1 billion EU pledge to the “Stand Up For Ukraine” initiative.

Debate: Spotlight on EU financing for Ukraine

The Committees on Foreign Affairs, Development and Budgets will jointly debate the EU financing for the relief and reconstruction of Ukraine. Ms Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair of the Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Ukraine's integration into the EU, as well as Gert-Jan Koopman, Director-General of DG BUDG (EU Commission), Katarína Mathernová, Deputy-Director-General of DG NEAR (EU Commission), and Bernadette Frederick, Director in DG ECHO (EU Commission), will inform Members on the past and planned EU support to Ukraine.

The discussion comes at a crucial moment in time, against the backdrop of the proposals put forward by the Commission in its Communication of 18 May 2022 on relief and reconstruction in Ukraine, and ahead of the European Council meeting of 23-24 June, during which Member States will take a decision on Ukraine's candidate status.
