Webinar: State of the European Union 2020, 16 September 2020

We are delighted to invite you to a webinar panel discussion, which will follow the first State of the Union address delivered by European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, before the European Parliament. This event will take place on Wednesday 16 September from 8.00am-9.45am via the Zoom platform.

Every year in September, the President of the European Commission delivers the State of the Union address before the European Parliament, taking stock of the achievements of the past year and presenting the priorities for the year ahead. Ursula von der Leyen will deliver her address at 8.00 am (Irish time) on Wednesday 16 September 2020. The speech will be followed by a plenary debate with Members of the European Parliament.

Marking this major speech, together with the European Commission Representation in Ireland and the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA), we will host a live-streaming of President von der Leyen's State of the Union address, followed by a webinar panel discussion assessing the key themes explored and President von der Leyen’s outlook and priorities for the future of Europe.

The address will be live-streamed from 8.00am and followed by the panel discussion from approximately 8.45am.

Speakers will include:

  • Senator Regina Doherty, Leader of Seanad Éireann;
  • David O’Sullivan, Chair of the Governing Board of the European Policy Centre; and
  • Dr Mary C. Murphy, Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration and Lecturer in Politics, University College Cork.

The panel will be moderated by Martina Fitzgerald, Journalist and Author.
