Webinar: The Conference on the Future of Europe - the role of the European Parliament, 1 December 2021

It is a great pleasure to invite you to a webinar discussion, co-organised with the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA), on 'The Conference on the Future of Europe - The Role of the European Parliament'. This event takes place on Wednesday, 1 December 2021 from 1.00pm–2.15pm. Speakers include MEPs Guy Verhofstadt, who will give the keynote address and Deirdre Clune.  Registration required.

This event is the part of a series co-organised with the IIEA around the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) and just before the European Citizens’ Panel, which is set to be hosted by the IIEA in Dublin Castle on 3-5 December 2021.

The Conference on the Future of Europe aims to open a new space for debate and engagement with citizens on the future of the EU. This Conference will tackle momentous contemporary issues facing the Union, like: the green and digital transitions; addressing economic inequalities, strengthening Europe’s resilience in the face of crises; and positioning Europe in a geopolitically contested post COVID-19 world. Recommendations which emerge from the Conference will be followed up by the EU and impact its future shape, priorities and direction.

We are delighted to host this timely event, featuring a keynote address by Mr Guy Verhofstadt MEP, European Parliament Delegation Coordinator to the Conference on the Future of Europe, followed by a panel discussion to examine the importance of the Conference and the central role of citizens, the European Parliament, and national parliaments in shaping this debate.

The panel comprises the following speakers:

  • Ms Deirdre Clune MEP, European Parliament representative to the Conference on the Future of Europe;
  • Senator Alice-Mary Higgins, Representative of the Houses of the Oireachtas to the Conference on the Future of Europe and Member of Seanad Éireann;
  • Professor Jane Suiter, DCU School of Communications and Director of the DCU Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society.
