Maltese Students Visit the European Parliament in Brussels

"It was an amazing experience when I visited the European Parliament and the House of European History, where we got to know the beginnings of Europe till today. During the visit we had the chance to meet Malta's MEPs and ask them questions. It is a memorable experience that I will never forget." - Ms Eleanor COGZELL (student at Giovanni Curmi, Higher Secondary School, Malta)

A group of 20 students from Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, Malta, who last year underwent the non-formal  ‘Introducing EU Affairs’ course have this year visited the European Parliament in Brussels on a 3-day visit as opinion multipliers. The visit was oganised by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta, and the EP's VISSEM Unit in Brussels.

"It was an incredible trip and a wonderful experience. Our main aim was to visit the EU Institutions; we saw the hemicycle, where a lot of heated discussions take place."

The Maltese curator of VISSEMM, Mr Kurt BUTTIGIEG gave the group a short presentation on the EP, its functions and purpose.

"We got to meet the Maltese Member of the European Parliament Dr Alfred SANT and later even the assistant of MEP Miriam DALLI gave us a brief description of what she does and her experience in the EP. Another day was spent in the Parlamentarium, where you see a step by step progression of how the European Union formed through the years, as well as a tour of the European House of History."

Students shared their trip and experience on different social media channels such as Instagram and Facebook giving hundres of people a window on the sites they visited within the institutions. The students also posted a photo of the Maltese Members of Parliament as exposed in the Parlamentarium, and this was shared on social media portals by MEPs Alex AGIUS SALIBA, Josianne CUTAJAR and Roberta METSOLA.

The group also had some time to take in he cultural side of Brussels with a short tour of the picturesque city centre of Brussels and Bruges, and also had the opportunity to visit some tourist attractions in Brussels and Bruges.
