The future of the European book sector (A9-0257/2023 - Tomasz Frankowski)
I voted in favour because the report addresses critical challenges facing this industry in the digital era. In a world dominated by social media, it is essential to support the book sector. The cost of paper production and the dominance of English-language books are also significant hurdles. Promoting sustainability in the industry, including the efficient disposal of excess books and responsible production practices, is important. The report aligns with my views to preserve cultural richness by supporting local libraries and bookshops. I also advocate for AI research to enhance the sector’s sustainability and transparency. Finally, initiatives like the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL), the “first book program”, and the network of “reading ambassadors” should be launched or continued at various levels.
Parliamentarism, European citizenship and democracy (A9-0249/2023 - Alin Mituța, Niklas Nienass)
I voted in favour because the report aligns with core European values and principles. I support concrete measures to deepen democracy by strengthening citizen participation and empowering the European Parliament as the only directly elected institution in the EU. I advocate for the European Parliament to have the direct right to initiate legislation. It is crucial to establish a more equitable distribution of power between the European Parliament and other EU institutions that are gaining greater influence in the legislative process.
I support proposals such as an annual European citizens’ agora, with a particular emphasis on including a youth component within it. Engaging citizens and more empowered European Parliament are the key to ensure that the EU continues to evolve in line with their expectations and needs.
