1993-2010 : Elected four times as a Member of the French Parliament for Vaucluse between 1993 and November 2010, during which period he was a member of the Law Committee. Appointed Special Representative of France for Afghanistan and Pakistan from 2009 to 2010 by the President of the Republic.

2010-2011 : In November 2010, became Secretary of State with responsibility for Transport attached to the Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing, then was promoted to the post of Minister of Transport on 29 June 2011.

2012-2017 : From 2012 to 2017, was elected as a Member of the French Parliament representing the 11th constituency of French nationals residing outside France (Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceania). During that term of office, was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the France-Kazakhstan friendship group in the National Assembly.

2002-2017 : From 2002 to 2017, was a member of the French delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (PA-OSCE), of which he was the Special Representative for Central Asia and Mongolia from 2013 to 2016.

2012-2017 : From 2012 to 2017, he was also a full member of the French delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
