Estrategia de la Unión para poner fin a la mutilación genital femenina en el mundo (B9-0090/2020, B9-0092/2020) EN

Explicaciones de voto por escrito

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is an inhumane, brutal, and unacceptable intervention. It is an undisputed violation of girls' and women's human rights as it has serious health consequences for the females subjected to it.
The resolution text, recital A, explicitly states that FGM is ‘a form of violence against women and girls and a manifestation of gender inequality, not connected to any one religion or culture’.
The Venstre disagrees with this proviso and has done so consistently in the past.
FGM is, while also being a global problem, especially prevalent in parts of Africa and the Middle East. In these countries FGM is closely linked to a cultural ritual or sacred duty, i.e. one demanded by religion. The practice of FGM in its various forms has also spread to Europe with the increased migration from these regions. We had wished for the resolution to reflect this fact.
For this reason the Venstre’s delegation chose to abstain while supporting any ameliorating amendments to the resolution.
In the same vein, the delegation chose to support Resolution B9-0092/2020, which on the whole expresses a more realistic description of, and approach to, this important issue.
