Since the military has seized power in a coup the 1st of February 2021 after the National League for Democracy Party (NLD) won the elections, Myanmar has been suffering systematic and severe human rights violations perpetrated against peaceful protesters, politicians, journalists and the Rohingya community as well as other minorities. I strongly condemn the actions taken by the military in Myanmar and support the Resolution through which the European Parliament calls on the military to respect the outcome of the democratic elections, to end the state of emergency declared, to release all political prisoners and reinstate the democratically elected government and the constitutional order. Furthermore, the Resolution calls on the military to allow independent and impartial investigations into allegations of serious human rights violations. The Parliament also urges the European Union to increase pressure and take action by adopting targeted sanctions against those who are responsible for the coup.
