23-10-2020

The PPE—LU Delegation voted against all amendments related to the labelling of so—called ‘veggie burgers’. Of course, the denomination of food products such as ‘burger’ or ‘schnitzel’ is a very important part of our shared food—cultural heritage and the connotation with those products should be respected. However, the amendments themselves make clear that this question is already regulated under current EU Food Law, in particular in the context of existing food labelling legislation.
Article 7 of Regulation 1169/2011 on Food Information to Consumers already outlines that food information shall not be misleading, particularly ‘as to the characteristics of the food and, in particular, as to its nature, identity, properties, composition, quantity, durability, country of origin or place of provenance, method of manufacture or production;’ or in case ‘a component naturally present or an ingredient normally used in that food has been substituted with a different component or a different ingredient’.
If we feel the need to clarify existing definitions and labelling provisions, this needs to be done via a revision of the Food Labelling Regulation and not through the backdoor of the CAP reform. The European Commission has announced such a revision within the context of the Farm to Form Strategy.

Europeisk klimatlag (A9-0162/2020 - Jytte Guteland) DE
